A new friend, Jason Young posted this today on twitter. “I am learning that an idea is bigger than you think and it is not what you think.”
This is so true. I have been working this week on “Take 2” and the more I work on it the more I realize the idea is bigger than I originally thought it was and it is not what I thought it was going to be. In fact it is better than my original vision for it.
For those of you who do not know, our church is burdened with reaching the community (as most churches are). Our vision is to take the church to the community, instead of expecting the community to come to the church. Why?
First, chances are the community is not going to come to our church on their own.
Second, there are more people out of church than in church. In fact I would say there are not enough churches to accommodate the people in our community that need to be reached. But right now that is not a problem… accommodating them… for they are not going to church. We believe it is because the church has not gone to them in a culturally relative, effective way. We are not sure if we have the answer of how to reach the un-reached, but we know the same old same ol is not working… it no longer connects. We are willing to step out and try something different.
We will do what ever it takes.
The message of redemption is to important to wrap it in ways that were effective at one time but now are ineffective.
So we are stepping out of the church box and trying to figure out what can be done to meet the spiritual needs of our culture. They need the power of Christ to be shown to them. It is time for the church to represent Jesus for who He is, not who we are.
Our desire is to see the Bible believing churches in our area run out of room in their worship centers. The first step in seeing that happen is to step out ourselves and do what we can to connect with our community. We call this “Take it to the Streets”, Take it to the streets, as clumsy as that phrase is, reminds us of our Job… we are to go and minister to the community in order to see them come to Christ.
Take 2 is a part of that vision. It is called Take 2 because it is the 2nd “go” idea that we feel God placed on our hearts (even though its not the 2nd thing we have done). Currently we are in the planning stages of it and should have teams assembled to accomplish the task by February 20th. I am excited about it, and so is our church.
Jason’s comment just struck a cord with me today. I think in “church world” one of the reasons an idea becomes bigger than we realize is because it was God given. As we are faithful to work toward it, He revels more of His plan of what He wants it to look like. That alone makes it “bigger”.
Just think if He did it all at once… it would be overwhelming.
Whew! What a God! Thanks for your wisdom Lord… that you give us so we can accomplish your mission. The world is at stake! May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name AMEN!
